Lacona and surroundings, walks, discoveries and wonders of Lacona on Elba Island
Lacona is situated in the south of the Island of Elba. Known as a classic destination for summer holidays, it spreads from the hills of Monte Orello and Colle Reciso down to the sea. The coast is characterized by coves and small bays which offer different types of sandy shores and sea beds. The promontory of Capo di Stella separates the Spiaggia Grande (Big Beach) of Lacona Gulf, one of the longest of Elba Island, from the pebbly beach of Stella Gulf or of Margidore. On the right side, keeping the hills behind, spreads the small and lovely beach of Laconella. From here starts the road of Segagnana, an old cartroad opened in 1944 by the French troops, which has been the only way to reach Marina di Campo, until the construction of the provincial road.
Going towards north on the road of Colle Reciso it’s possible to reach a small church of the XVII century, located on the top of Monte Santa Lucia, and enjoy a wonderful view on the gulf of Portoferraio. Until some years ago this place has been the destination of many pilgrims from Rio and western Elba. On Monte Santa Lucia it’s possible to see also the ruins of the Fortress di Luceri, destroyed many times by the pirates and always rebuilt, until its final destruction by Barbarossa in 1544.
